The Legion of Mary is the largest apostolic organization of lay people in the Catholic Church with over four million active members in almost every country of the world. Founded by Servant of God, Frank Duff, in Dublin, Ireland in 1921, the Legion of Mary has been active in the United States since 1931. It has had cotinuous Papal approval.

PURPOSE: Although the Legion of Mary is primarily known as a worldwide apostolic organization, its main purpose is sanctification- first, of its members and second, of the society and enviroment in which it works. The Legion offers those who give themselves to it, a system of spritual formation based on St. Louis de Montfort’s True Devotion to Mary, Our Lady’s spiritual Motherhood, and the Mystical Body of Christ.

MEMBERSHIP; There are Active members and Auxiliary (praying) members. Active membership is open to men and women over the age of 18 who practice their Roman Catholic religion faithfully. Members attend a one and a half hour weekly meeting and perform an apostolic work assigned in pairs. Junior membership is open to Catholics under the age of 18. The types of service focus primarily on the Spiritual Works of Mercy:

1. CONVERSION (establishing friendly contact with those outside the Church and promoting the “New evangelization” called for by Pope St. John Paul II)

2. CONSERVATION OF FAITH (fostering Catholic ideals and devotions in parishes and Catholic families (Enthronement to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary)

3. CONSOLATION (visiting hospitals, nursing homes, shut-ins, or performing other spiritual needs in our parish)

Active members strive to grow in holiness through a balanced program of prayer, study and service.

Auxiliary Members commit to pray the Legion prayers, including the Rosary daily for the intentions of The Blessed Mother. There is no age limit for Auxiliary Members.
